Get to know Pitt’s Center for Commercial Applications of Healthcare Data

CCAThe Pittsburgh Health Data Alliance (PHDA) is a collaboration between UPMC, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt). The PHDA funds research projects from investigators across these three institutions, focusing on projects that leverage data to improve healthcare and have potential for commercialization.

The Center for Commercial Applications of Healthcare Data (CCA) is Pitt’s arm of the PHDA. The CCA supports interdisciplinary health data research with the potential to solve unmet needs in healthcare, focusing on early-stage research projects within the University of Pittsburgh. In this quest, the team of CCA Commercial Translation Associates works directly with Pitt researchers during all funding stages. The CCA team sources potential projects across Pitt departments, socializes requests for proposals, and introduces the PHDA to interested researchers. During the proposal phase, CCA Associates provide hands-on guidance on crafting winning research proposals and successful pitches. Once projects have been selected for funding, the CCA provides project management during the contracting phase and funded phase. Towards the end of the funding period, the CCA then helps research teams build commercial translation roadmaps for the continued development of the project towards commercialization.

At any given time, the CCA Associate serves as a point of contact and resource to the Pitt research team who directs and guides the investigator through the process of successfully obtaining, pursuing, and developing early-stage digital health projects for commercial application either within UPMC, or outside of the system.

At the CCA, commercial translation is considered a team sport, and the key to success is the collaboration with the PHDA partners at UPMC and CMU. We are excited for the continued growth of the Alliance. With a renewed focus on interinstitutional collaboration, we look forward to building an even stronger partnership that will bring digital health research to fruition.

Also in 2022, the CCA aims to launch its 11th funding cycle. The CCA seeks applications from researchers that can save lives, optimize care, and reduce healthcare costs. Check back here for the release of the next request for proposals (RFP). Ultimately, the CCA provides collaborative support to the University of Pittsburgh’s researchers and industry partners as they transform research innovations into healthcare solutions.
